The individual constantly struggles with the problems of knowing.  Surrounding him and embedded in his consciousness are linguistic,  cultural, emotional, and  ethical complexities that color his perception and subtly influence his decisions. 

   

To this end, the student must first examine the filters of knowledge or Ways of Knowing: emotion, logic, language, and perception before he launches out into the larger considerations of  Areas of Knowledge: math, natural science, social science, history, art, and ethics.

   The Requirements for Theory of Knowledge include:

  1. One 1200 to 1600 word essay from a prescribed titles list (60%)

  2. An oral presentation of at least 10 minutes on a problem of knowing (40 %)

 

   Five journal entries per nine weeks for the first 3 nine-weeks

  (an internal requirement for Coral Reef High)

 

  

   Theory of Knowledge is an epistemological course usually taught in 

   the junior or senior year of the International Baccalaureate Diploma

   Program.

 

         ToK is primarily concerned with problems of knowing

         Theory of Knowledge is designed to :

  •   challenge the assumptions of knowledge   

  •   examine the reliability of critical sources  

  •   consider different cultural and emotional perceptions

  •   foster international understanding 

A key element in the IBO's educational philosophy,

ToK examines problems of knowing in the following areas:

Social Science, Natural Science, Math, Art, History, & Ethics.
